A detailed bird's-eye painting shows the fan-shaped island of Deshima, its bridge, buildings, gardens, shoreline, and small Japanese and Dutch figures.

1833–1836 · Colour brush painting on silk

View of Deshima

Workshop of Kawahara Keiga

Why it matters

Keiga's workshop made detailed images that Dutch staff could carry home. The view turns a regulated trading island into portable documentary memory while omitting enslaved household workers recorded elsewhere in the Nagasaki archive.
