Portrait of Hasekura Tsunenaga

Raphaël Sadeler II

Why it matters

Hasekura's portrait combines a diplomatic letter, Japanese swords and dress, and Christian rosary. The mixed signs resist any account in which Japanese visitors merely became Europeanised images.
